HP OfficeJet Pro 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We purchased this printer last year to be used on our home wi-fi. For several months, it worked fine. Then last autumn it began to print only after using the PrintDoctor. Then it began to not print at all except on my wife's computer, which is also an HP though just a few months older than mine. I called support and the rep did something and it seemed to work. Then a couple of days later it stopped again. When I started to go through the weary process of troubleshooting again, I found the settings on the printer locked so I could not access them, (it said it was locked by the owner). I then began to use a USB cable to print, and that worked for a little while, now it not only does not work, but it does not even detect the printer. The PrintDoctor does not help any longer. I have restarted the printer and the computer. I have unplugged the printer while the thing was on and when it was off. The warrantee has now run out, and so has my patience; if someone does not help me repair this, I am purchasing another brand of printer; I have used HP printers since around 1998 and NEVER had a problem before.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

I do really, really thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, the printer basically died and I am replacing it. I am sorry I cannot attempt your solution!
