Poor-fitting cartridge replacement leads to "Printhead Damaged"

5520 All in One printer

I was replacing the ink cartridges, something I've done dozens of times. One of them (black) didn't fit in well. I couldn't move the cartridge into proper position, so I started the printer. Some problems immediately ensued. The cartridge carriage wouldn't slide left from under its cover. I eventually was able to slide the cartridge carriage left, to see all four colors. I was also able to adjust the black cartridge into proper position. Now, when I turn the printer on, there's a banging sound, as though the cartridge carriage has hit an impediment while sliding left. Also, I get an error message that says "Printhead Damaged." Any ideas?
