Previously working printer appears not to be recognized by pc

This printer was previously working.
I went thru the laborious virtual assistant routine, finally uninstalling / downloading / reinstalling the printer driver for an envy 7645 printer. The installation processed to completion. Still can't print. When I attempt to print a pdf document, the printer doesn't appear in the drop down menu for selecting one. If I look at the device manager, it shows an unknown printer (which it says is working properly.)
Tried to get HP on the phone but was rebuffed due to inability to find a serial number. (looked on the bottom, back, and inside the cartridge bay.)
I have images of the labels on the printer which my have the SN, but I see no way to attach them to this post.
