Same problem -- same fix although I just power down before the panel blocks the cartridges.

My HP 6980 just broke for the same reason - the door arm on the right side that tells the printer the door is shut - broke.  It broke do to no reason at all, just normal use.   What crappy materials choice by HP!

Agree. + with an investment of the duplexer, 250 sheet lower tray, and spare ink cartridges, its not as if the $$ is in the printer alone. Had no idea why the printer wasn't working. The diagnostic program I downloaded from HP gave no clue. The W7 driver only came back with an error. Wasn't until the XP driver on my laptop gave the the door open error that I started searching for a solution to what turned out to be the problem. Awful design when a cheap piece of plastic turns an otherwise fine printer into a piece of junk.
