Printer claims fictitious paper jam

OfficeJet Pro 6968
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

When I start the printer it says there is a paper jam. There is not. But I go through the steps of taking the tray out and reaching back where it would be and putting tray back in. Then it warns me that printer was improperly shut down. This did in fact occur at one point because it stalled out shutting down for 20 minutes so I had to unplug it. In any case as soon as I move past the warning screen, the paper jam error comes back. I have shut down the printer "properly" many times now, but it continues to cycle through this sequence of misbehaviors. All of this began 2 days after the warranty expired.

Printer claims fictitious paper jam

@Camino2019, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

It seems like this is a false paper jam error on the printer. Make sure you have tried the steps mentioned in this document to clear any jams in the printer.

If the error persists, resetting the printer to its factory settings may help.

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Let me know how this goes.
