I purchased the recommended ink but the printer message says its not compatible and will not print.

If you insert your old ink, do you still get the error message? If yes, try these steps:
If no, the new ink could be faulty, you could either return it to the store/website you purchased it from or contact the HP Support Team regarding this.
Note: Select the country accordingly to get the contact details for support.
