Printer stopped printing automatic duplex

Deskjet 4658
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We have just upgraded our desktop computer and reconnected our existing Officejet 4658 printer via wifi. The automatic duplex function will not work any more. I have been through the printer preferences and properties and found a setting for automatic duplexing unit that is showing as not installed.2019-12-22 (2).png

I have clicked on the automatic configuration and updated it, the duplexing unit then shows as installed but still will not print 2 sided automatically. The setting then reverts to automatic duplexing unit not installed again.

I cannot understand why this is happening since this feature worked perfectly on my previous desktop computer which also ran windows 10 and is still working from other devices connected to the printer. Any thoughts please?

Printer stopped printing automatic duplex

@Steve202,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that the automatic duplex function is not working on the new computer.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you root uninstall the printer and then reinstall it and check if it helps.

Here is how it is done.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.

Printer stopped printing automatic duplex

Hi. This has helped make some progress. I am now able to print with automatic duplexing but bizarrely, the printing preferences option still only refers to printing on both sides manually. Also, I can only print in black and white - I cannot find any options to allow me to print in colour. Any further help please?

Might be worth mentioning that, on my laptop under Printing Preferences - Paper/ Quality, there is an option for black & white or colour - this option is not present on the desktop computer. Also, under the print dialogue, the laptop has a comment stating 'this is a web services printer' where the desktop shows an ip address.

@Steve202,

The HP Print and Scan Doctor might get this sorted out

Please download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from this Link: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/HPPSdr.exe

Run PSDR v5.0.2

Once the PSDR detects the Printer, it will show up the IP address and Software Status.

Select the correct Printer and click on Next.

PSDR will check if the Printer is on the Network and communication between the PC and the Printer. Once the connection check is done, click on Fix Printing

Once PSDR goes through all checks and automatic fixes, click on Print a test page.

Regardless if PSDR printed the test page or not, click on “NO PRINT”

PSDR will then notify you that there is an update available, click on continue, and PSDR will apply the patch and ask for a reboot.

Post restart the PSDR will run automatically to check for more issues.  If no issue found close PSDR.

Printer stopped printing automatic duplex

Hi. We have been away for a few days so have only just been able to try this. Unfortunately, running the Print & Scan doctor has found no issues and has not made any improvement.

@Steve202,

I recommend you create a new user account on your computer following the steps in the below article and then install the printer and check.
