new (HP) ink cartridge installed. Alignment page printed and inserted, alignment started. Alignment apparently fails because message is 'Default settings'.

Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Reset the printer
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Clean the particular ink cartridge
Perform steps 10 and 12 from this document.
Once done, refer to step 11 in the same document to align the printer.
