DIRECT ENVY HP5640 PRINTER
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HAD PROBLEMS WITH PRINTER SO WAS ADVISED TO DELETE IT FROM PC..

WHEN I GO TO CONTROL PANEL IT SHOWS"NETWORK HP5640 PRINTER" IS ON PC, BUT WHEN I TRY INSTALL " DIRECT HP5640 PRINTER" IT ASKS FOR "WPS PIN".  I PUT IT IN BUT IT DOES NOT RECOIGNISE IT.

,HP SUPPORT SHOWS THAT BOTH PRINTER ARE INSTALLED BUT CONTROL PANEL SHOWS ONLYTHE NETWORK ONE.

HP PRINTER ASSISTANT WAS NO USE AND HP SMART  ALSO USELESS

Hi @THOMASNOAH

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you

Due to the current global COVID-19 situation, we're seeing an influx of customers coming in for support. We appreciate your patience.

To better assist you -

  1. How is the printer connected to the device USB or wireless?
  2. What is the status of the wireless light on the printer, steady or blinking?
  3. I would like to know, is your router set to work on 2.4 GHz network or 5 GHz network band?

The HP Direct printer is a wifi direct connection, the default password for it is12345678

 Wi-Fi direct is a method that connects your printer directly to your phone or computer using default or an assigned password, the drawback of this type of connection is that you will not be able to access the internet and print at the same time.

To connect the printer to the network, refer to Connect to a Wireless HP Printer

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

THANKS FOR ADVICE BUT IT DID NOT WORK.

THE PC IS CONNECTED TO THE PRINTER BY WIRELESS AND THE LIGHT ON THE PRINTER IS CONTNUOUS.

I DO NOT KNOW THE SPEED OF THE ROUTER - HOW DO I DO I FIND OUT ?

I WENT TO CONTROL PANEL TO " ADD A DEVICE".  IT SETTLED ON "DIRECT -C5-HP5640 SERIES"

I PUT IN THE PIN 12345678 AS YOU ADVISED AND IT AGAIN SAID "THAT DIDN'T WORK"

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE ?  IN LOCKDOWN SO CANNOT GET ANYBODY IN TO SEE THE PRINTER

REGARDS

Try the steps in the document to connect the printer to the network-

  1. From the home screen of your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon .

  2. Touch the Setup icon .

  3. Touch Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings, and then touch Yes to confirm your selection.

  4. After the default network settings are restored, touch the back arrow, touch Wireless Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.

    The printer searches for available networks.

  5. Touch the name of your wireless network.

  6. If your wireless network does not display in the list of wireless networks, touch Enter New Network Name, and then type the name of your wireless network.

    NOTE:

    Type the exact network name, including any uppercase and lowercase letters.

  7. Type the WEP or WPA key (network password), and then touch Done.

    If you do not know your network password, go to Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password.

    Once the printer connects to the wireless network, the blue Wireless light on the control panel turns on solid

 Let's try and uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

--->In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

--->Select your HP printer.

--->Select Uninstall.

--->In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

--->In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

--->Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

--->Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

--->Click on the Drivers tab.

--->Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

--->Select OK.

--->Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

--->Close Devices and Printers.

And then reinstall the printer full-featured drivers from software and drivers page

Let me know if this helps!
