I have a HP Photosmart 2610. I have just installed generic cartridges. I know there is an issue with HP printers and generic cartridges (deliberate rejection of generic cartridges so as to force folk to buy the prohibitively expensive HP parts). I am getting the "check the cartridge on the right" error message. I carried out step 4 of the recommended solution and the printer printed the calibration sheet ok. However when prompted to press the OK button to proceed I got the same error message back again. Bizarrely when I pressed the copy button and attempted to copy a printed sheet it worked fine. I repeated again using a part coloured sheet, again fine! So then I attempted to print a page from a document on my PC and, again, fine! What is going on here? The HP solution centre screen which pops up tells me that the black cartridge is incorrectly installed, but that surely can't be as it's working ok?

Elsewhere on the Internet I have read that there may be an issue with broken springs breaking, or making holes in, the flexible electrical connector ribbons. What springs are folks referring to - is it the long lever type springs that press against the sides of the cartridges or some other springs? I can't see how the former can damage the cables as they are nowhere near them? And in my case they are not broken anyway,

@Jeff-in-Pembs, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

The use of non-HP ink cartridges is not recommended. It may or may not work. HP cannot guarantee the functionality of non-HP ink cartridges. For now, let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Also, perform step 3 mentioned in this document.

Let me know how this goes.
