Hi,

My printer complained of low ink for one color and showed that the other inks were not depleted. So I replaced that one color cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge. Immediately (i.e., before any further printing), the printer complained of a second color being depleted and would not print. So I was forced to replace the second cartridge. Now, before I have printed a single page, the printer says the third color is depleted and will not let me print. Does this mean any time a single color ink is depleted I would have to replace all of them! That seems ridiculous. I hope someone can help. Thanks.

@SG248, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Not necessary that the ink cartridges should go low at the same time, let us isolate and resolve the issue-

Did you check the ink levels of the printer? If no, here is how you do it-

A Printer Status Report lists the printer serial number, estimated ink levels, ink cartridge numbers, printer usage, and connectivity, scan, and fax settings.

  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.

  2. From the home screen on the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon

  3. Swipe up on the display to touch Reports, and then touch the Printer Status Report.

Example of a Printer Status Report

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

I tried all of the suggested remedies.  Reset the printer and inserted a known good black ink cartridge.  Inserted another new one identical to the  new one that failed.  Same result.  Printer said to replace cartridge with a new genuine HP cartridge (which bot were).

Ended up putting the defective new cartridge back in its box and installing the other new one that works in the rinter.

I need a resolution to this problem as I am now stuck with a brand new cartridge that is defective.

TEJ1602-- this did not solve the problem at all. Obviously I checked the ink levels in the printer. The printer status shows ink depleted for all three colors, one after the other. But it is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE that three ink cartridges got completely depleted at the same time, especially since the printer does not let me print if a single color ink is depleted. So I suspect this is a defect in the printer. If this happens again I am never going to purchase an HP printer again, because it feels like a scam. I am being forced to buy ink when the ink is not depleted, just to be able to use the printer.

And I suspect you did not read the description of my problem, because your solution (check ink levels!) was totally off-base.
