Setup cartridges required error


I have been given a new printer but its out of warranty in June 2019  Its an HP Office jet 5220.

I thought I could just buy the inks for it, but nope, I've been given dud inks as well which cost me $70.


Brought some inks for it from an authorised HP reseller but when I loaded the inks error keeps saying to use the setup cartridges.


The printer did not come with any inks so I brought them separartely.

They are proper original inks correct for the model of the printer.


I would like to send back the Inks for a full refund because the HP reseller company has sold me a defective product.

The inks will not work with the printer. The company won't refund me the money for the inks because I have opened them and put them in the printer.

I feel like I have been scammed.

I would like to send the inks directly to HP and try and get my money back that way, since the printer is useless.

I will trash the printer since I didn't have to pay for it.

But if someone can advise where I can write to HP in New Zealand, would be appreciated.

Let us perform an OOBE reset on the printer to bypass the use of setup ink cartridges.

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
