Hi,

I know its a little bit strange, but my printer has stolen a few weeks ago. I was wondering if there is a way of tracing it.

Thanks

That's very sad - I really like the 8740 and you cannot purchase these anymore (discontinued).

Personal Opinion

I am not aware of any way to track down a printer unless you stick an identifying chip on / in the printer.

If someone were to put the printer back on the network, it would be traceable within that local network but unlikely to show up on the Internet.   However... If you think the printer was "liberated" by one of your neighbors, it might be worth your time to check the local wireless signals to see if anyone did leave the printer "on the net" without any security.   Even thieves can make simple mistakes.

If you have a printed copy of the Network Configuration sheet, that sheet provides the essential information about the printer including its serial number and MAC address.  Contact your local police department and give them the information.  Should your printer be found as a result of other policing activity, you might recover your property.   If your printer shows up on Craig's List, having reported the theft might be helpful when sending the police after the culprit.

For those reading:  Worried about losing your stuff?  Spray paint a blob (or twenty) of your favorite color of spray paint on the outside of the device.  Ugly?  Absolutely.  Making an item "hard to miss" can reduce theft.

You can also report the theft to your home insurance company - whether that is a good idea depends on your insurance plan and your deductible.
