Updated my HP 5255 firmware and now it won't connect

HP Officejet 5255
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just bought an HP Officejet 5255, got it set up on USB, printed test page, aligned successfully, everything A-OK. Then I updated the unit's firmware and everything seemed to go fine, no error messages, got a "firmware upgraded successfully" message. I wanted to connect wirelessly so I looked up how to do that. When I went to change from usb to wireless I got an error message that said the printer has lost communication with the computer. Kept trying and continued to receive the same message. I re-booted and still no communication. I changed usb ports and still no communication. I also switched out the usb cable. I can print a test page and I can print a Word document from a file, but when I go to the HP Printer Assistant to switch from a USB connection to a wireless connection it says "The connection between your computer and your device has been lost. Please make sure that your USB cable is plugged into both the computer and the device." I can't get past that message to continue wireless setup. How can I fix this?

I see that you are facing issues while connecting the network printer to your new Windows 10 PC.


To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:


Are you connecting to a Router/Wireless direct/hotspot?

What type of network are you trying to connect?

Are you connecting to desktop or notebook? Is this Wireless capable.


Let's try to restore network defaults on the printer: 


Next thing, I would suggest here is to Run the Wireless setup wizard on the printer: 

Next thing, I would suggest here is to do a clean install of the printer software:


First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.

Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.

Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Restart your computer.

Now click to download and install the software.

In the connection type window, select “Wireless” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
