black ink NOT working properly :(

HP Envy 5660

printer NOT printing out barcodes from tix I bought online. certain Word document formats (specifics; line etc... NOT printing either) yet printer shows there's still ink in the cartridge. seems like it's low on ink bc of these issues. just replaced the color printing cartridge but we print exclusively in B&W. Help, please.

What operating system? The driver may have an option for "Print in Grayscale" and "Black Ink Only".  If you do not have the "Black Ink Only" box checked the printer will use the color ink to print certain graphics features, even if they are black.

 

It would seem your printer is not printing color properly.  See the document here for information on diagnosing color not printing.  In particular, I would suggest printing a test page as shown in step 9:

 

Step 9: Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report
Follow these steps to print a Print Quality Diagnostic report.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4 size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup
     
    .
    The Setup menu displays.
  3. Touch Reports, and then touch Print Quality Report.

If the color does not print properly and the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue you can force the printer to use black ink only by removing the color cartridge and printing in single cartridge mode, see page 52 of the user manual here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04425658.

Answer:

 

Barcodes may not "translate" into something the printer can understand  - print barcodes as images.

 

For example,

 

➡️  If the document is (can be) translated to PDF, print that PDF file as an image.

 

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

  • HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
  • Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.

PDF - Print as Image

 

If the file will not print due to unusual content (odd fonts, color schemes, tables, other oddities), print the file as an Image.  Image printing does not require the printer software to translate file content.

 

Open the offending PDF file in Adobe Reader DC > File > Print > Advanced >>

  1. Set the printer select the colors (Optional)
  2. Print the PDF file as an image

 

➡️  If the "tix" are something viewed on a website:  Create a Snip of the information on the page > save the snipped image as a .jpg file > print that file.
