Did not change anything. A week or so ago turned printer on to print a document from the web and got very poor results.
Multiple pages and some have very little ink, not enough on any to know what was being printed. Today trouble shooted and tried cleaning heads, cleaning carteridge, all to no avail. Shows I still have a little less than 1/2 black and about 1/2 on coloured, tells me not ready to be replaced. Test pages print colour fine, some of the test pages have no black lines. Please help me!!

Hi @afg1,
Welcome to the HP support forums. Good day.:) I understand that you require assistance regarding not printing in black. I will be a delight to assist you with this.
Terrific description and great diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂
- Did you try to make copies in black directly from the printer?
- Did you bypass power stripes and connect the printer directly to the wall outlet?
- For a start please try to make a few copies in black directly from the printer without any communication from the computer.
- If it copies fine, please uninstall the printer software by following these steps:
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
- Select your HP printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
- In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
- Click on Drivers tab.
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
- Select OK.
- Remove all instances of the same.
- Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
- Close Devices and Printers.
- Then reinstall the full feature software from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-7640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/6617267/mo... and also update the printer firmware from the same link.
- Please select the correct operating system before doing it.
- Other steps to try would be to try printing from different browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox.
- Also, reset the existing browser and try again.

Hi @webster67,
Thank you for posting on HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I see from the post that you are having issues printing in black on your HP Envy printer. I'll be really glad to help you with this,
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Are you using genuine HP Ink cartridges or refilled cartridges?
Are you able to make a copy from the printer?
Have you tried cleaning the printhead?
In the meantime, let's try to perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.
Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.
Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Remove USB cable, if present.
Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.
Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.
For more details, please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Printers - Black Ink Not Printing and other Print Quality Issues
If the copy works fine, I would suggest you try to uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13 ). Restart the PC
14 ). Now click on the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers (please choose the Operating system and version before downloading and installing the full feature software).
15 ). Connect the USB cable only when prompted.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thumbs Down I did contact HP support. As i stated in my previous post, the HP support solution to my issue was to upgrade my printer. I believe that HP is well aware of a defect in the printer design that results in the black ink not working. It is totally unacceptable that with the number of people that experience this problem that HP would suggest in the troubleshooting steps to replace the printer cartridges. I believe HP is well aware that print head is defective and cartridge replacement will not correct the loss of black ink printing .
HP's technical support solution was to upgrade my printer. It will not be an HP product for sure.
$300.00 for the printer, 3 sets of ink cartridges @ $80.00 a set, Total pages printed before HP's recommendation to upgrade my printer - 712 pages
HP's cost per page = $540.00/712 76 cents a page wish I would have called HP support before I bought it i would have upgraded right then.
By the way, based on yur response I don't even believe you read my post. 2 thunbs and 2 big toes down on your response.
