hp 6978 not printing black

all computers
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Microsoft must have done an update and a new printer lost all quality to the prints. Help desk suggested installing new driver which resulted in the color quality coming back to normal but the black completely stopped printing all together.  Have tried turning off printer and reloading drivers but two different computers cant get black to print. Definitely a software issue!

hp 6978 not printing black

Hi @rexdog

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page

  1. From the printer control panel, open the Setup  menu.

  2. Open the Reports or Tools menu.

  3. Touch Print Quality Report. Check for black.

If the issue persists, clean the printhead

  1. From the printer control panel, open the Setup  menu.

  2. Open the Printer Maintenance menu.

  3. If necessary, open the Tools menu, and then touch Clean Printhead.

  4. If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. If necessary, repeat these steps for the third cleaning cycle.

    NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

Also, perform step 9 from this document.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
