mac runs on ios 15.4. All drivers loaded. Printer will not print from usb cable. printer under mac preferences  says "error"

Follow the steps below-

 

Go to System Information to check the USB detection- try different port and cable if not detected.

Restart the devices and try printing.

No luck yet. MacBook recognizes printer shows ready until you try to print then shows “busy” or “error”. HP Smart recognizes it as well with a green check but won’t print. It will print from a windows computer.

Reset the printing system on your mac and see if that helps. By doing so, you'd be removing all the printer entries on the computer.

  1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.

  2. Click Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax.

  3. Right-click (or Control + click) anywhere inside the Printers window, and then click Reset printing system.

  4. Click Reset or OK.

  5. If prompted, type your username and password, and then click OK.

    The printing system resets.

  6. Turn off the printer, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the printer.

  7. Wait until the printer is idle and silent.

  8. In the Printers window on the Mac, click the Add button .

  9. Select your printer from the list, and then click Add.

    It might take a few seconds before your printer displays in the Printers list.

Followed your directions reinstalled printer it showed the printer with a green light but when I tried to print green light turned yellow said “in” use” put would not print. Thanks again

I'd suggest you run the disk utility to fix any possible issues on the computer. Refer to the link https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/disk-utility/dskutl1040/mac for help.(This is a third-party link.
