HP 8610 Office Jet Pro

Bought a brand new HP 950XL Black ink cartridge and I am getting an incompatible ink cartridge error.  I have read executed the troubleshooting guidance on the HP site and the message boards.  Nothing works.  Does any one have any other suggestions?

BTW - how do you get a live customer support agent?

Hi @ChalkIV

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Try inserting the old ink cartridge if available and check if the error persists.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Also, perform step 3 from this document.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Kumar,

This had no effect.  I read in another blog this may be a result of HP's regionalization of ink cartridges.

I found another blog that suggested that I might need a regionalization reset?

The old cartridge that works fine is a Z20 and the new cartridge is a Z10.  Could that be it?

If so, how do I do that.  I now have a complete set of Z10 cartridges and am ready to move forward with that option

Thx Chalk

HP customizes some printers and ink cartridges to meet local customer needs. If you take your printer from one country/region to another country/region, you might not find ink cartridges with the same number on the label as your original ink cartridges. If you install an ink cartridge with a different number on the label, you might see one of the following error messages:

  • Incompatible Cartridges

  • Cartridge Not Intended for this Printer

  • Incorrect Cartridges

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
