why does the wireless button (small blue button at the bottom of the printer interface) suddenly start blinking? I am usinga USBconnection.

That just means you are not connected to your router SSID wirelessly. Normal since you are USB connected. If you want you can turn off the wireless radio in the printer and it will stop. Info is in the User Guide.
