MFP M281fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have forgotten my password on my MFP M281fdw and have tried everything I know of to try to reset it. Every thing I try takes me back to the password window. I think I have to reset to factory settings and start over. But .... how do I do THAT without it asking me for my password? HELP!!

Hi,

Try factory reset following steps in the manual on page 96:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05543371

  1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe until the Setup menu displays. Touch the Setup icon to open the menu.
  2. Scroll to and select the Service menu.
  3. Scroll to and select Restore Defaults, and then touch OK. The printer automatically restarts.

If this doesn't work, try "NVRAM reset" following this thread:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/Hardware-Reset-Laserjet-MFP-281fwd/td-p/6853269

Here, on bottom page, Mr. ShlomiL suggests another specific Solution thread, answered by Mr. John Getzke:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/How-to-reset-NVRAM/m-p/6836167/highlight/true#M35356...

In his answer (bottom page), Mr. Getzke suggests an easy-to-do NVRAM reset, linking to a Youtube Video.

The proceeding applies to M277 and M281 printers as well.

Hope it helps,

Good luck

Thank you @MaxMueller. Following the YouTube steps to do a NVRAM Reset worked like a charm! This time I'm not setting a password.
