HP Color Laser 150nw
macOS 10.15 Catalina

As a previous post from another user, I just bought a HP Color Laser 150nw and am having trouble getting it connected to my MacBook and iMac, both running 10.15 Catalina.

It's connected to my Virgin router network just fine and connects and prints (using AirPrint) with an iPhone 11 Pro Max but not the computers.

There are many posts talking of no drivers for Catalina. AirPrint uses no driver, which is fine except I'm probably missing out on details and facilities that the printer offers. Using the existing network I can see from 'reports' printed out by the printer itself, that it is hooked up to the home network OK, but won't add successfully to the printers list on the Mac preferences.

The printer 'does' connect to the iMac and MacBook using its own direct network and prints fine, however this is a pain. In the middle of working I have to switch from the house (working from home during lockdown) WiFi net work to the printers own network to print and back agin to continue working.

Is this the only feasible work-around to the printer at this point?

When the printer is viewed via preferences on the direct network (when switched on) it's recognised as there and Adele. All fine. The minute I switch to the main house network (and see the printer as it's already added via direct network) it then says 'Offline'.

It's getting really frustrating. I have even tried connecting using the printer IP number with the Mac. No success. I'm no fool and if I'm having issues, goodness only knows what an average non IT person experiences, using an up to date Mac OS.

Should this be Apple's issue, HPs or both?

Ciao

@samhinks, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To be able to assist you better, I would like to know the following:

  • Are the printer and PC connected to the same network?
  • Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz?
  • What is the distance between the router and the printer?
  • Is there any antivirus software installed on your computer?
  • Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results?

Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.

Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.

Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
