Windows 10 really, really dislikes USB.

But, you can try a couple of things:

Do you know how to go into your system components?  Look up the USB Root Hub.  Uninstall it, then reinstall it.  Windows security sometimes gets in the way of data transmission from the USB Root.  Uninstalling and reinstalling usually makes the devices work.  Unfortunately, you may need to do this after every Windows security update.

Also, what driver are you using?  Look up and download the "HP Universal Print Driver for USB connected devices".

No way to put this on a network?  It would make like a whole lot easier.

You can get a cheap switch on Ebay or from an office supply store that would be better than dealing with USB.  I mean like $25 or less.  We buy them by the case for $12 each, so there are deals..

Edit/Add on:  Update the firmware on the printer!  This helps counteract the Windows created, connection disasters.

@GaryL1  is giving you the best advice when recommending that you connect via Network cable. This is the most reliable method of connecting, as long as you use a Standard TCP/IP port for the printer driver. If the use of USB is a concern over other people using the printer, you can use access control functions built into the printer to restrict usage to select workstations.
