I have started getting a thick gray vertical band down the length of my paper.

Either a bad cartridge or your fuser has failed. Remove the cartridge and look at the green/blue drum on the bottom. If it has a matching stripe on it then likely a different cartridge will solve the issue. Also examine the inside of the printer to see if there is evidence of spilled toner. If the cartridge does not have that defect then it is possible the fuser has failed. Can you post a sample?

What is the fuser?  I just replaced the cartridge.  The problem also occurred with the other one.
