LaserJet Pro P1102w 20180302 Firmware won't Install

LaserJet Professional P1102w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

EDIT 6/12/2018

We have several of these printers in my office and I made a interesting observation while attempting to update a second printer today:

  • The second printer's firmware datecode was 20130213 prior to running the new 20180302 firmware installer.
  • The 20180302 firmware installation said that it "Successfully updated the firmware".
  • However, now the printer lists the firmware datecode as 20130703.

So, why would the new 20180302 firmware installer change the printer's firmware datecode from 20130213 to 20130703 rather than changing it to 20180302?

ORIGINAL POST 6/10/2018

I have a LaserJet Professional P1102w with firmware datecode of 20130703.

On 6/7/2018 I received an email from HP Support Alerts letting me know that there is a new firmware (ver 20180302) available for the HP LaserJet Pro P1102 Printer series. It provided this link to download the new firmware.

On this page I was happy to learn that the new firmware remediates CVE-2017-13077 and many other vulnerabilities related to the KRACK WiFi vulnerability from late 2017.  I then took these steps:

  1. I downloaded the firmware installation file named "LJP1100_P1560_P1600_FW_Upgrade_20180302.exe".
  2. I connected the printer via USB.
  3. I launched the firmware installer.
  4. A window opens and says that it detects my printer and lists it as HP LaserJet Professional P1102w on port USB002.
  5. I select it and click on the "Update One" button.
  6. Another window opens and asks "Are you sure you want to update the firmware?"
  7. I click on "Yes".
  8. The firmware update process nearly immediately stops and a new window opens saying "HP LaserJet Professional P1102w WiFi: Firmware is up to date."
  9. The printer configuration still shows the datecode as 20130703

It seems the new firmware is not installing successfully. I've tried running the firmware update using three different computers and the same scenario played out on each. I also tried unplugging the power from the printer and plugging it back in, but that did not make a difference.

Perhaps something is wrong with the new firmware update utility. Has anyone else gotten it to work?

LaserJet Pro P1102w 20180302 Firmware won't Install

@RyboFlavin

Thanks for your patience and time.

I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link: https://hp.care/2eRyV3c to download the drivers and the firmware for your printer.

Note: Make sure you select the right printer (LaserJet Pro P1102w) ( There are two similar printer 1. LaserJet Pro P 1102w  2. LaserJet Pro P1102w)

LaserJet Pro P1102w 20180302 Firmware won't Install

Dear Raj, thank you for the advice, you convinced me never to buy another HP product. The user is asking about firmware upgrade and you are replying about driver issues. This is after I have clearly explained that there are 2x P1102W hardware versions and one of them is out of support, most lilely the one this user is trying to upgrade. Have a nice day too, I hope the weather is fine wherever HP outsourced its customer support.

LaserJet Pro P1102w 20180302 Firmware won't Install

Raj1788,

I followed your instructions, step-by-step.  The outcome is still the same as posted in my original message where I stated that the new 20180302 firmware will only update the printer to firmware datecode 20130703.

Here is the product info from one of our printers:

Product Name: HP LaserJet Professional P1102w

Formatter Number: Q91DTZN

Product Serial Number: VNB3220840

Firmware Datecode: 20130703

Will you please confirm that the new 20180302 firmware should actually update the firmware of our specific P1102w hardware version to firmware datecode 20180302?

A clear statement from HP stating that the above printer model/revision IS CAPABLE or IS NOT CAPABLE of installing the 20180302 firmware would be most appreciated since we have nearly 20 of these same printers in my office.

Thank you

LaserJet Pro P1102w 20180302 Firmware won't Install

@RyboFlavin

Appreciate your time and passions,

I did a deep double check on firmware not updating to the latest version.

There are two similar printers.

1. HP LaserJet Professional P1102w

2. HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w

HP LaserJet Professional P1102w (CE657A) which does not have EPrint and Wifi direct

The latest firmware update on HP LaserJet Professional P1102w printer is 20130703

https://hp.care/2KJpI8c

HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w (CE658A) which does not have EPrint and Wifi direct

The latest firmware update on HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w printer is 20180301

https://hp.care/2KMncOm

Please double check the product number of your printer, if you have an HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w (CE658A) please go ahead and update the firmware.

Keep me posted if this helps you.

Have a great day!

LaserJet Pro P1102w 20180302 Firmware won't Install

Raj,

I am the New Jersey Technical Specialist with AARP Tax-Aide (A Volunteer Organization) supporting 153 x Tax Sites having at last count 86 x p1102w printers which MUST be wirelessly secure.

We are concerned about KRACK and VPNFilter.

I'm sure you can appreciate that Tax Info MUST be secure.

I have found that CE657A and CE657AR  p1102w will NOT update with the firmware update to (20180301) currently posted.  CE658A and HP p1109w do update.

PLEASE ESCALATE TO THE HIGHEST LEVELS

An immediate update to Firmware including CE657A and CE657AR is required, ideally still having CE658A, CE662A for p1109w and whatever other boards are in the 110X series.

Neither AARP Tax-Aide nor Hewlett Packard need it on Social Media that Tax Sites and HP Printers are insecure!

I can only speak for New Jersey Tax-Aide, but be aware there are 3,500+ Tax sites in the USA doing close to 2 million Tax Returns annually.

As a Volunteer organization we can NOT afford to replace these printers. and let's not have both of our "good service" reputations irreparably harmed.  It might only take one site failure to damage us forever.

Thank You in advance for the prompt attention.
