MFP M281fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello,

Does anyone know how to disable the energy-saving mode on a color laserjet MFP M281FDW?  I've looked at the blog and HP recommended going to the energy-saving mode and select "Never" as the option.  However, that option is not available.  It only gives 2,4,8 hours as options to select.  It's frustrating having to turn on the printer when not in use.  I would like for it to be on all the time so it will print at any time I need it just like my previous Brother printer.  If this is not a possible option, I might as well return this printer and exchange it for something else.  Please advise.

Make sure that you have the current firmware installed as HP did offer more options on power saving with recent updates. If you just bought the unit, likely the firmware is going to be at least 2 or 3 revisions old.

It does have a 24 hour option in the menu. You may need to scroll down to find it:

Shut Down After

2 Hours

4 Hours

8 Hours

24 Hours

If you want to disable it, enter the Secondary Service Menu.

Touchscreen control panels
1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Setup (Gear icon).
2. Select the space between the Home (House) and Help (?) symbols
3. Select Back arrow.
4. Select Setup (Gear icon).
5. Scroll to 2ndary Service, and then select it.

Scroll to:

Auto On/Auto Off

Enable

*Disable
Use this item to enable or disable Auto On//Auto Off feature.

My firmware is up to date.  Still does not provide any option to disable it.  Any other recommendations?

Did you try the Secondary Menu option I posted?

I’m trying but cannot get to the secondary screen.

I’m guessing this secondary  step is a hidden screen correct?  I’ve tried numerous times hitting that empty space between to home and ? To no avail.

You can say that I guess. It's another menu screen that becomes available when you hit certain screen/button combos/sequences. I guess this one is a bit tricky to get to. The instructions are straight from the manual. I've never tried it on this model.

2. Select the space between the Home (House) and Help (?) symbols
3. Select Back arrow.

Sometimes I've found on other models pressing and holding one while pressing the next works, others are pressing one then the other very quickly in succession works.

You might also try it from the Home screen vs being in the Setup screen, but usually the Setup screen is where you need to be to activate the Secondary Menu. If you get it right, the Secondary Menu will be listed at the top of the Setup screen when you go into it again.
