PJL command to set the pitch=17 does not work on laserject pro m507dn printer

HP Laserjet M507
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and older

A simple printer  command that we have used for many years. It changes the printer's pitch to 17cpi (where it should remain until changed back via another PJL command). If the command is issued within a document print job, it works.

If it is executed as a stand-alone to set the pitch to 17cpi, it does not "hold" the setting. It reverts to 10cpi.

This command has worked  on all other lasers for years. The client recently purchased the M507, and we found that it does not see to work on this model. Perhaps there's an onboard setting to allow changes to be saved.

I have used both the included hp driver and even the universal hp pcl5 driver (also tried several other HP drivers with no luck). Everything prints just fine, but it will not set and retain the pitch at 17cpi with this command.

The command is a BASIC program that prints PJL code. Note I use the DEFAULT parameter which is supposed to store the setting.

PRINT CHAR(27):"%-12345X":
PRINT "@PJL DEFAULT LPARM:PCL PITCH=17":CHAR(10):CHAR(13):

Any suggestions on what to look at or change would be appreciated.
