When I tell my printer to print it just gives me the message " Finishing Printing: Wait until you have finished printing before you put in the output tray extender." I have tried switching off all power at the wall and back of the printer, to no avail. The printer will do a copy, but won't print from the computer. This is urgent as we need to print out practice exam papers for my daughter's current GCSEs! Thank you!

@je15

A very warm welcome to the HP community. A very good day to you.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY 4523 All-in-One Printer and when trying to print get a message stating "Finishing Printing: Wait until you have finished printing before you put in the output tray extender". The printer copies fine though. You have restarted the printer and the issue persists. Not worry, I'll do my best to help you. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • When was the last time your printer able to print fine?
  • Did any hardware changes happen on the printer (like a cartridge replacement, paper jam, carriage jam, etc.)?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

# 10 from the below image is the output tray extender (also referred to as the tray extender). Please have it out as shown in the below image before you print something:

If the printer continues to display the error then I suggest you to reset the printer. This will restore the printer to its original settings and will also disconnect the printer if it is connected to a wireless network. I have sent you a private message with the reset steps.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted on the results. Cheers! 🙂

This did not help me. I have tried everything and it still does not work. It seems many people have the same problem. Has it ever gotten resolved?
