Every time I print, it seems that some of the toner sticks and ends up being printed in a repetitive, smudgy pattern down the left side of the page. What can I do to fix this? Unfortunately the printer is now out of warranty so I cannot request further assistance from HP Support.

Measure the distance between smudges and compare to the chart below. Experience is that if it is down the left hand side and often half moon shaped then the pressure roller in the fuser unit has delaminated.

Thanks for the chart, that helped a lot. The smudge is crescent shaped. Based on that information it does look like the issue is with the fuser roller. Is the recommendation to replace the roller, or attempt to clean it?

If the coating is coming off there is not cleaning possible. As for replacement, these fusers are very complex so likely a whole new fuser would be the best step, however OEM HP fuser are fairly pricey and I am not sure if there is a lot of refurbished fuser units around.
