HP Laserjet Pro MFP M521dw
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I have (allegedly) set up SMTP configuration correctly.

  • SMTP server is smtp.mail.me.com
  • Tried ports 25, 587 and 465
  • Tried with and without SSL
  • SMTP authentication - tried on and off
  • User ID (iCloud) is correct
  • I found out about the 2FA issue, so I created an app-specific password on the iCloud site, and used this as the SMTP password
  • When I test the setup, it passes
  • Error on scanning to email: An error occurred while sending the e-mail. Try sending again.

Hi,
A such may occur due to your Google account security settings.

First, open the following link and login to the same account as you set for the printer.

Note: if you are connected, sign out from your account, select your account and manually enter the password to ensure you indeed use the correct password, then click on Security from the left pane:
https://myaccount.google.com/security

Within the Signing in to Google section, check the "2-Step Verification" velue.

If it is set as "On", create and use an App-Specific Password with the printer:

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

If it is set as "Off", Within the Less secure app access section ensure that the feature is on.

If it is Off, click on Turn on access (not recommended) and toggle on the feature. Otherwise, the verification will fail.
Once you are done run a test for the outgoing user profile and check if the problem been resolved.

Hi,

Can you run the test again and make sure the test passes?

Additionally, what exact language is set for your printer? what exact steps are taken to scan to email from the printer?

The test (from the bottom of the SMTP configuration page) passes, and I am receiving the test email successfully. The language (printer settings) is English.

Steps to scan:

  • Scan
  • Scan to E-mail
  • Send an E-mail
  • To
  • Select email address from address book
  • Done
  • Next
  • Scan

Please ensure the latest firmware is installed for your printer:

Also, I suggest testing another mail service such as Gmail for example, may you see any difference there and can you successfully scan?

I updated all drivers/firmware earlier, and tried new settings for gmail:

  • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465 (tried all of them)
  • Use SSL: Tried on and off
  • SMTP server requires authentication: Tried on and off
  • SMTP user ID: gmail address
  • SMTP Password: gmail password

Error: The SMTP server uses an authentication method that is not supported. Try a different server.

I have seen cases where test worked but normal use did not and it turned out that there was no DNS server settings that allowed printer to resolve the SMTP server. Set the secondary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and see if that helps.

New error now: The SMTP server uses an authentication method that is not supported

The eagle has landed!

I don’t know whether it was the combination of the secondary DNS and the app-specific password but it is now working!

I will test agaIn with my Apple ID as this is my preferred email, but if I have to continue with the gmail account it’s a small price to pay.

Thank you all!

I tried my Apple ID again but was unfortunately unsuccessful, even with the app-specific password and secondary DNS. However as long as it’s operating with the gmail account I can live with it.
