When I connect the printer over USB scanning is possible.
When I connect it via WIFI only printing works. HP Easy Scan and Mac Scanner program both show an error after long time of waiting:
HP Easy Scan: Yellow triangle mark on the scanner icon
Mac Scan program: Failed to open a connection to the device (-21355)
Is scan over WIFI not possible?
Printer web site opens, printing is possible over WIFI, all is fine - except that scanning is not possible.
Best regards
Andy

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the scanning error.
Please wake the printer up before you start to scan.
Update your Mac to macOS 10.15.3 using these steps - How to update the software on your Mac
Update the HP Easy Scan -
1.) Open Finder, select Applications, and then look for HP Easy Scan.
2.) Open HP Easy Scan. On the upper bar, click HP Easy Scan, and then click Check for Updates. Download any available updates, and then reopen the app.
Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Asmita,
thank you for your reply.
I tried all the actions without success. I printed the wireless system setup page and it's all OK.
In etiher application (HP Easy Scan, Mac Image program) scanning is not working. Printing however works.

Have you tried updating the Mac and printer's firmware as well?

Hi Asmita,
my MacOS version is 10.15.3 (19D76). I think it's the most recent version. My Mac is not showing any pending updates.
The printer firmware date is 20190814. Is it the last version?
I re-installed the HP software several times. But how can I update the firmware? When I search the web and the manual for it, the only solution I find, is to update HP Easy Start - which I have already done.
Best regards
Andreas

Have you tried Apple Image Capture as well? If you haven't, try these steps - Scan images in Image Capture on Mac
If the issue still persists, try Disk Utility
Keep me posted.

Hi Asmita,
thanks for your help and your patience. I just saw that you replied to another person with the same problem: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Error-21355/m-p/7515761#M222895
In her case updating the firmware helped. So could you please quickly confirm me that 20190814 is the most recent firmware for my printer? Or is there a newer one?
If it's too much effort let it be, no worries. I can do my scans also connected by USB. It's just less convenient.
Best regards
Andreas

To find the firmware version installed, print a configuration page -
-
Turn on the printer.
-
On the printer control panel, press and hold the Start Copy button
, and then release it when the Ready light
blinks.
The firmware update is not available for Catalina but if you have a Win 10 PC, try this download link.

Hi -- I've also had a similar problem since updating to Catalina last week. I'm unable to get through to HP Customer Support and so came across this thread. I have the same printer as @rasenderhase and all the connections are fine. I can Airprint from my iOS iphone no problem, but not from my Macbook. I now have to rely on a USB cable.
I'm surprised and disappointed at the lack of information from HP on this. Can they please be clear if this problem is 1) a known problem with Catalina; and 2) if a firmware solution is imminent?
thanks
