a problem with a laserjet p1006

HP LaserJet P1006 B/W printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This is on a dell Inspiron 15-3541 laptop OS Win 10 Home 64bit. Unless I turn on the HP laserjet P1006 printer 1st before I turn on the laptop then the printer works fine. But if the laptop is turned on 1st then the laptop won't see the printer and I tried updating the printer drivers.  No go, still the same problem. Rebooting the laptop doesn't help ether.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  2. Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.

  3. Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.

    • If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.

    • If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  4. If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.

  5. If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.

  6. Try to print.

Check IP address in network configuration report

1.Select it from the Print Information Pages drop-down on the Services tab in Printer Preferences.

 

Assign manual IP address and that should fix the issue.

Once you know your printer’s IP address, entering it is pretty easy. Here’s what you do:

HP Printer Static IP Address

  1. Run your Web browser.
  2. In the Web browser’s address bar, type the IP address of your printer and press Enter. Assuming you entered the right address, the HP printer control panel should appear.
  3. Click the Networking tab.
  4. Under Connections, click Wired.
  5. Under IP Address Configuration, click Manual IP.
  6. Enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway in the appropriate boxes.
  7. Click Apply.

This printer is a USB cable only. Not a LAN cable or a WI-FI connection.

Perform root level uninstalltion to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers. 
  • Restart the PC again.

Download and install the printer driver.
