carriage making high pitched grinding noises

HP OfficejetPro 8600
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Carriage making high pitched grinding noises before and after printing.  Could be going through a lot of ink.  Ink may be getting deposited on the right side of the carriage.

Hi @DarcyJ

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the carriage issue.

I'd suggest you check for any obstruction. Use your hand to move the carriage to each side, making sure it moves freely. You may also refer to step#1 from here

Try resetting the printer -

1) Take out the cartridges.
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Wait for 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware. Download and install the firmware for macOS 10.13 from this link. You may also refer to this document - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
