The flashing red light indicates a user solvable problem. Make sure you have the right paper loaded for what is trying to print. Put paper into the manual feed to see if it feeds from there. Can also be caused by a jam, check for small bits of paper. Another test is to power the unit off, disconnect the computer cables to it, then power it back on to see if it comes to ready when not connected to your computer. This will eliminate a possibly corrupt print job causing the error.
