Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Although I had already changed the SSID of my printer without connecting to either LAN or USB in the past and thought I knew the steps by heart, it took me a few hours again.

The goal of this message is to help users who want to temporarily use Wireless Direct to setup wifi via a router on their HP Laserjet (Infrastructure Mode). This is especially helpful if you want to avoid having to setup the printer via LAN or USB. These steps are not recommended for first-time setup, and certainly not for those who are not digitally savvy!

The basic steps are decribed on this forum page: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/Changing-SSID-on-M217-Laserjet/m-p/5896637

However, this time around I followed the steps but got a blank page after I opened the ESW (the embedded web server, management webpage) of the printer. I opened 192.168.223.1 and got an empty page.

So here are some troubleshooting tips for lost souls who are looking for solutions.

First, make sure you have not only restored all defaults on the device, but also the network defaults by going to "Network Setup"  and then "Restore Defaults" on the OSD (screen) of the printer.

The blue LED will be off, which means there is no wireless connection.

Next, go to "Network Setup" , then "Wireless Menu", then "Wireless Off/On". The blue wireless LED will blink.

Now, setup wifi direct by going to  "Network Setup" , then "Wireless Menu", then "Wireless Direct". Make sure you choose "Wireless Direct" > "On".

On a PC, make connection to the HP SSSID, "HP-Print-a5-Laserjet 100" in my case. The PC will complain that the connection is limited and the blue LED on the printer will still blink. Open Windows Explorer and go to Network. If all's well the printer will be listed. Right-click on it and choose "visit webpage".

If the webpage doesn't open, check your connection. If it opens, go to tabpage 4, "Networking", and go the entry called  "Wireless Configuration". Here, enter the correct SSID for your router and password.

You can now switch off Wireless Direct on the OSD of your printer, and change the TCP/Ip settings if needed via  "Network Setup" > "TCP/IP Config"

*) Also, check (or disable) firewalls if you don't get a connection.
