using 3rd tray to print letter and legal from a large pdf file

hp laser jet pro m404
macOS 10.14 Mojave

HP laser jet pro m404 with a 3rd tray installed so  I can have letter in tray 3 and legal in tray 2.  Supposed to auto select as its printing.  Had a 2055dn that did a wonderful job and was told that the 404 replaces the 2055.

Please clarify what the problem is or your question.

I am guessing that you are describing  a problem where the printer is not selecting the correct paper try for your print job.  In that case the most likely cause is a tray setting mismatch on the printer.  Use the control panel on the printer to access the tray configuration area.  Review the current settings and adjust the trays so that they match the paper that is loaded.  Then try your print job again.

If the problem persists then you need to review the software settings on the PC, printing application and document.  Make sure they match up with the settings on the printer.  Once you have a match the printer will behave the way you expect it to.  When there is a mismatch the printer will attempt to do its best to process the job, but that is often not what the user wants.
