Hi.

How can I restore damaged bootloader on a CF card? Our HDX 9004 enters infinite boot loop because of missing boot device.

Thanks,

Pavel.

Not sure what you are referring to by a CF card.

One common problem that may cause rebooting is a damaged table top mic cable.  Try disconnecting the mic from the HDX and test.

The HDX has a built in backup copy of a fresh operating system. If the running config or operating system software becomes damaged the software can be restored with the below process.

- Power the HDX down

- insert a paper clip in the reset button hole located next to the power button

- hold the paper clip in while pressing the power button

- continue to hold the paper clip in for 25 seconds while the HDX is booting up

- this will start the process of erasing the flash operating system and restoring the backup copy

- all current configurations will be erased and the system will need to be manually re-configured

If the system still will not properly boot after the restore completes give Polycom Support a call.

Hello, Ken.

I had tried disconnecting all cables besides power and DVI or component video output and resetting the system earlier this week. It didn't help, and here's why.

Compact Flash (CF) card is the only built-in non-volatile memory device, capable of booting the HDX system (as far as I know). The backup copy of fresh OS won't do any good, if this card is damaged - system will not boot to the point from which it can proceed to unpacking the restore_image.tgz. Boot sequence starts at first sector of the CF card, which should contain bootloader, which is capable of loading the vmlinux kernel, which loads programs listed in sysinit section of inittab file, which are capable of restoring the image. Our system fails at first step, since the bootloader is missing. It is the only part of boot sequence, which I couldn't restore myself. Can you help me with the copy of bootloader for HDX 9004?

Thanks,

Pavel.

Sorry that level of repair is not available in the field.  The unit needs to be replaced.

Contact Polycom support for details.

If the CompactFlash card is defective for any reason (dead, physically damaged etc.) I would assume that you can replace it with another CF card of 512MB ($7 on eBay) and then performing Recover process using paper clip button should do the trick. The only reason why it may not work if the backup copy of the OS resides on the same CF card which I hope is not the case. I hope it must be sitting inside another small flash memory chip somewhere on the main board. Let me know if this is something can be done.

My unit just died (stuck on Splash screen) and I'm trying to figure out if this is because of the software issue or hardware failure. So I was also planning to replace CF card and see if the repair process will work. When I connect my CF card to PC running Windows I cannot read the card, so I assume it is formatted by non-Windows file system and cannot be read by Windows PC. I wish it was a small utility that allows to re-format CF card and bring it back to working condition...

Hello Alex,

as explained in my other replies this is not something an end customer can do.

Please contact Polycom support.

alexg,

Were you able to find a replacement CF card?  Our unit is showing symptons of the same issue and it seems like replacing the CF card would be sufficient.

Do you know if Polycom has tied the software on the card to the specific hardware of the unit in anyway?

Hi all

Anyone know how to make the image for HDX from empty CF card.

Thanks,

HP Recommended

I think should someone know to do it, please share!

Hello all,

as already outlined in other replies this is not a supported scenario.

In order to access the CF card you must open the HDX which will invalidate any warrantee or maintenance on the unit.

We therefore do not encourage or tolerate such discussion within this official Polycom community and will remove any post that would detail this.

For support issue please contact your Polycom reseller and ensure to regularly check for Security bulletins => here <= discussing potential loop holes and fixes that are proposed by Polycom.

I am closing this topic.

Best Regards
