OMEN by HP 17-w202na Gaming La
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had a look at the specs for this device with the CPU being only an i7-7700HQ processor which I am afraid would bottleneck the performance of a gtx 1070. I wish to upgrade to an i7-7700/i7-7700k for intense programming and graphic design, gaming and everyday work. Is this possible and is this a worthwhile upgrade or is the 7700HQ good enough? If it is possible, would upgrading cause the laptop to overheat and the battery to drain faster? Please answer all these questions because for my purposes, I was expecting to find a >3GHz processor.

Hi @Student1345,

Thanks for reaching out!  A very good day to you. 🙂 This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. I understand that you are looking for information regarding processor upgrades on your PC. I will be a delight to assist you. 🙂

A commendable job was done by attempting it before posting your question in the HP forums. It is always a great pleasure to work with technically competent customers like you. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

We definitely value your relationship with HP tremendously. We appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

First off, the Omen in question is a very high-end computer. This link gives you an overview, features and product specifications of your computer: https://ssl.www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=15304446#!tab=specs

It should all answer your questions.

First off, the processor is a high-end processor and it should be good enough.

  • Also, this has turbo boost technology and has a processor that performs between 2.8 and 3.8Ghz
  • It should get warm with intense gaming like other computers.
  • For upgrading the graphics card on this, you will need to consult a local Best Buy or Staples technician regarding this as HP does not recommend it.
  • If the graphics card is upgradeable on the computer, then this processor looks like being good enough on paper.
  • However, a lot of factors come into play. So I request you to consult a local technician, before venturing into it.

Please note that HP does not recommend upgrading either the operating system or the computer’s hardware as the components that were initially installed with the unit are certified by HP for optimal performance.

However, as you are very technically inclined, I would still request you to consult a local technician like Best Buy or Staples before proceeding to upgrade the unit.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.:)

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂
