Hi @SteveH2020

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

  • Which version of iOS are you using?
  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Images, or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

Check for software updates.

Go to Settings > General > Update the software.

Try printing using AirPrint driver

Refer to this document.

You may reinstall the HP Smart app if the issue persists.

Click here to download and know more about the app.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Click the “Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

Thanks for the reply.

My iPhone is on iOS 13.4.1, but this affects all Apple Devices (2 x iPad Air) one othe iPhone I don't have exact iOS verisons of those right now. This issue affected all devices after the printer ran an automatic update.

I have tried printing from MS Office (Word) and Also PDF Editor.

The same issue is apparent using AirPrint or HP Smart. The only work around I have so far is to launch the document in the HP Smart App and use a Smart task that I created to force black and white print. But this is quite a pain to keep doing this.

@SteveH2020

The latest iOS version is 13.5.1. Kindly update the iOS devices and check if that helps.

Print a Printer Status Report to find the firmware version of the printer

Press and hold the Cancel button  for 3 seconds.

A Printer Status Report prints.

Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the iOS device.

Try printing and check if you are able to select the color/black option.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

@SteveH2020, that's unfortunate.
