To anyone who uses an HP ePrint printer enrolled with Google Cloud Print - how is the performance?

We have HP M401n printers on carts at our school. We activated ePrint on the printers, enrolled them in cloud print, and deployed each printer so that it is an available printing destination on the Chromebooks in that cart.

But when we print documents, it llllaaaaggggs. Like 10 second delay between each page it prints.

I've allowed unfiltered outbound access on ports 80, 443, 5222, and 5223 for the printers. And even during off-peak hours when our 50/50 connection is hardly used, it still lllaaaaagggsss.

Is this part for the course? Are all Cloud Print printers this slow?

Yes, cloud usage requires internet access to deliver the information online to the cloud servers, and then to process the information by a remote server, that delays comparing to a local printer connection, directly managed and processed on your personal computer.
