HP Office Jet 3830

Hey, just wondering if anyone can help me. I have only had my printer for 2 weeks and have printed a few items using my iPad as well as iPhones but during a printing session a message popped up saying 'contacting printer' but does not connect or print. The only way it will print eventually is if I email an item, which does take quite a while. Where as before it would just print straight up when I pressed print on the phone & iPad! Very frustrating. I have tried shutting it down & starting back up but this did not work! Any ideas? Anyone?

Hi! @Amsap, Welcome to HP forums!

I understand when printing from your printer you are getting error contacting printer.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

What application are you using print from your Ipad and Iphone?

Please try the steps recommended below.

Restart the computer, printer, and router to resolve any network or communication error states.
   NOTE:
The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before continuing.
Disconnect the power cord from the router.
Turn off the printer.
Close all running programs on your computer, including the HP software installation window, then shut down the computer.
Reconnect the power cord to the router, then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.
Turn on the printer.
Turn on the computer.
Try installing the HP software again.
If the printer is found during the installation, the issue is resolved.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂

I have the exact same problem. This is the second printer I've had now as the problem was the same so I took it back thinking it was faulty. So now I have a Officejet 3831, and the same problem. Works fine from iPhone and iPad for the first few times. Trying now about a week later and will not work from iPhone or iPad, and says Contacting Printer. Seems to work ok from my Macbook, but on iPhone or iPad I get this message and will not connect even though the Wireless is fine and connected. Tried restarting the internet, printer etc. but still no difference. Help!!

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP OfficeJet 3830 Printer. I understand that you are getting contacting printer error message and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

However, I will need a few details to provide an accurate solution.

  • Did you do any hardware of software changes?
  • How is the printer connected to computer, wifi -direct or to the wireless router?

Meanwhile:

Perform a power reset.

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  6. Turn on the printer.

Reply with the result of the above-mentioned steps, for further assistance.

Cheers.

To answer your questions below:

Software changes? Only updated software as the printer setup instructed me to, during that process.

Printer is connected to the wi-fi, and says all connected fine.

Have performed the power reset as you described below, but still get the message as the attached picture. Also attached a picture showing model serial number etc.IMG_0092.jpgIMG_0093.jpg

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

I understand the issue better now.

This is a connectivity issue.

Disconnect you phone from the wifi router and reconnect it again.

And type the new password if you have changed it.

Make sure both printer and your mobile device are in same wifi network.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.

Have tried the below. I am on Virgin Media and has a 2G and 5G wifi network The printer only recognises the 2G. Both the phone and printer are on the 2G network. On my phone I disconnected from the 2G wifi network and re-joined re entering the password.

Still the same messgae appears, Contacting Printer and nothing prints. Getting quite frustrated now! The only thing I've noticed the IP address is dfferent on the printer compared to what is says on the settings for the wifi on my phone?!

I too was able to see the printer listed and when I tried to print, I'd get "contacting printer", but nothing would print.  I followed all previous recommendations (rebooting routers, iphones, modems, etc), but I still had the issue.  I also tried a static IP address to no avail.  I finally tried a factory reset of the printer and reconnecting it to my wifi.  It was successful and I can print from my iphone again.

How do you do a factory reset?
