DeskJet 3636 not printing

Upon turning the printer on, when I try to print anything, including a test page, the first line will print broken and un-even. After that, there is nothing. Just blank pages. All updates have been installed. All recommended steps have been taken. After 3 solid hours of working on this, I give up and I am thinking I may never buy another HP Printer as I always have issues. This printer has rarely even been used since I have had it. Mainly because when it did actually work it drank the ink like a cactus in need of water in a dry desert. This printer has been my biggest headache for the last 4 years! If you have resolved the same issue, PLEASE help! These kids need to do their school work!
