I feel like I'm so close to getting it to work. I turned on wifi direct on printer, then wifi direct on wifi setting on phone. My phone displays DIRECT and printe name. I entered password from printer. Printer says successfully connected to mobile device, I press OK. On phone it just keeps thinking and says can't obtain IP address. Please, please help. So close yet so far away.

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are unable to connect to the Wifi direct from your phone.
Restore the network settings
1. From the Home screen, touch (Wireless) and then touch ( Settings ).
2. Touch Restore Network Settings, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
3. Print the network configuration page and verify that the network settings have been reset.
Turn on the WiFi direct
1. On the printer control panel display, from the Home screen, touch (Wi-Fi Direct).
2. Touch ( Settings ).
3. If the display shows that Wi-Fi Direct is 2ff , touch the toggle button next to Wi-Fi Direct to turn it on.
The WiFi direct password you can find it on the network configuration page.
Try to connect the mobile to WiFi direct again.

Update the printer firmware
Click here and refer this HP document to update the firmware.

Do you know if you need to have wi-fi to use wifi direct from a HP 5055 printer? Thanks so much.

PS is there a phone number anywhere to call tech support. If tried getting the Best Buy Geek squad to help but they say they don't do anything with mobile phones but replace.

You do not need a Wi-Fi connection to use WiFi direct on the printer.
I am sending you two private message. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.
