HP Tango will only connect (reliably) to HP Smart on my Android, or HP Smart on iPad. Not both.

I can only get my Tango to connect reliably through the HP Smart app on either my Android phone or my iPad, never both. By reliably, I mean that I can print from any app without the hassle of acquiring the printer from HP Smart before printing. 


If I remove the printer from both devices, the device that first connects to it will be good to go. If I want to use the other device to print, I have to remove the printer from both, then add to the second device first. 


Any thoughts?

Next try assigning a Manual IP Address



1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
3) Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
4) Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
5) Click Manual IP
6) If you see a Suggest a Manual IP Address button, click Manual IP address, and the Manual IP addresses are automatically filled out for you.
7) If your page does not have a button to suggest a manual IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the numbers shown in the report you printed.

Hi KrazyToad, thanks for diving in. Regarding the steps you've mentioned above, I've done all of that EXCEPT set it to IPv4 only. I'll give that a shot tonight and will update in a day or two. 


Also,  I just realized that you stated to set manual IP in the EWS. I don't think I've done that either.  I have, however, assigned a manual IP address to this printer in my router. I'll go ahead and ensure that it's also set in the EWS to reflect the router settings. 


Firmware is up to date.

I'm replying to my own post to add some new information. 


IPv4 only was already set

I changed the IP address to manual (matching router's static IP for the printer) 

I also enabled DHCPv4 and disabled DHCPv6 in Advanced Settings


One thing that I noticed as I was doing this is that even though the printer network information page showed the proper IP address, I could not access the EWS from any device.  I installed a network device finder in my iPad and it listed the printer with the proper IP address as well.  I sent a Wake on Lan command to the printer, and I was suddenly able to access the EWS.


However, I have to resend the Wake on Lan command every few minutes, as the connection to the printer dies after about 5-10 minutes.


My iPad can find the printer in AirPrint now, but only after I send the WoL command. In the EWS, under AirPrint, I get the following error:

But, like I said AirPrint works fine after (and only after)  WoL is sent. 


My Android phone can now access the EWS as well,  but HP Smart on that device cannot locate this printer to add, no matter how hard I try. It does see the printer in Wifi Direct, but even with the correct password it cannot connect. 


This just keeps getting stranger and stranger. Hopefully the above info gives you, or someone else, something to go on.

@AegeanEaglem, thanks for the detailed response.


Which version of iOS are you using? Check if there are any pending software updates available.

Are you connecting the printer to wifi-direct or to a wireless router?

  • Make sure the printer and the iPad are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the iPad should be on the 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
  • Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.
  • Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the iPad. Try printing. If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Restore network settings to default settings

● Press and hold (the Wi-Fi button) on the back of the printer for at least three seconds. Then the printer enters the Auto Wireless Connect (AWC) setup mode. It keeps searching and waiting for the HP Smart app to connect within about two hours, and then stops searching.


Use the HP Smart app to connect the printer.

Kindly follow the steps mentioned in this document.


To open the embedded web server through a network :


1. From the printer control panel, press and hold (the Information button) until all the buttons light up, and then press and at the same time to print the wireless network test report and network configuration page. 2. Find out the IP address or hostname of the printer from the network configuration page.

3. In a supported web browser on your computer, type the IP address or hostname assigned to the printer. For example, if the IP address is, type the following address into a web browser: http://
