HP smart app faults

HP Recommended
Deskjet plus 4120
iOS

Can’t find much info on the HP smart app but I bought my first HP printer (deskjet plus 4120) yesterday and it was a nightmare to set up with the app. When I got it working after 3 hours (the printer needs the be next to the router for set up but not after) I tried to print. The app kept crashing and print button at the final stage wouldn’t work. There is no option for A5 size printing but there is A6? It doesn’t make sense unless I am missing something. I also don’t like the automatic border on the print it’s looks like a giant Polaroid is there a way to remove this too? Really struggling and tempted to get a refund for this printer

(edit I primarily print art prints on this printer and the app doesn’t allow me to do what I need to do. But I know that the printer has full capability)

@Keeleyprints

You are welcome.

All the sources I used in this thread are freely available.

===============================================================

My own limited expertise is primarily in the OfficeJet Pro arena.

OfficeJet Pro printers (top of line in a given series) tend to provide more robust features for document printing and can also print a very decent photo / image (borderless in many cases - paper size and type restrictions might apply).

My personal recommendations might not be relevant to what you want in a printer.  Why? I tend to spend more than some on tech.  I fully respect that not everyone can do so and that others choose spend their money elsewhere.

What to do?

  • I do suggest you start at the HP Store (all HP product series gathered in one spot).

  • Consider that you really want - borderless printing, for example.  Right away, you move away from the "Deskjet" series.  I could be wrong - it is my understanding that Deskjet printers simply do not support borderless.  These are largely "budget printers" that do "budget" things.  Envy Pro / Officejet Pro, then.

Side Note:  In general, unless you are running a business or cracking out dozens or hundreds of documents a month, you don't need a LaserJet Pro Printer.  THAT is a personal opinion and is NOT directed at the wonderful line of LaserJet Pro printers on the market.

  • Document printing?  Two-sided scanning?  For example, Two-sided scanning is a specialty - not every printer supports this.  In particular, "single pass two-sided scanning" (at this writing) is even more unusual.  You need a top-of-line OfficeJet Pro printer to capture this feature.

  • Consider what you can spend - start high when looking to see what you money can buy.  Why?  Less expensive printers lack features found in more expensive features - look at the best to see what you "could have" and comprise your list of "Want this" and "Must have that" options.  If you must later compromise, you will at least have a better idea of what you are sacrificing.

  • Read everything you can find on a potential printer - compare features - compare Specifications and Datasheets.  Take a look at the User Guide.  For example, Does the printer connect to your home / office network the way you expect?

  • Ask questions - if you cannot find something, ask.

  • Dither.  That is, think a bit on your final decision - then act.

===============================================================

We use the Internet.

For example, search for your potential printer's all important Datasheet

search = Officejet Pro 9025 Datasheet

We use UseTube.

We are fortunate to have an HP printer specialist in our Community who has shared a number of training videos on printers.

This is a nice printer - but it might not actually be the Printer-for-You.

Printer supports dual bandwidth, that is it can connect to 2.4GHz or 5GHz (name your SSID network names separately for each bandwidth and connect the printer to the SSID you want to use).

Print does support Custom Paper Sizes for Print.

It is unclear (to me) that the Mobile app will let you set / access these.

I am thinking "Not".

@greenturtle  - Does the Mobile version of HP Smart let the user access Custom Paper Sizes on this Deskjet Plus unit?  Thanks for any insight.

Media Sizes Custom (imperial)3 x 5 to 8.5 x 14 in

Key Media Sizes Supported (imperial)4 x 6 in; Letter; Legal; Envelopes
Key Media Sizes Supported (metric)

10 x 15 cm; A4; Envelopes

Printer does NOT support borderless printing.

Deskjet printers typically do not do so.

Borderless PrintingNo

Printer supports a variety of Media (types of paper)

Media TypesPlain paper, photo paper, brochure paper, envelopes and other specialty inkjet papers

HP Smart Mobile is less robust than it's cousins the HP Smart for Windows application and the HP Smart for Mac App.

What?  Resizing, Paper Size options, Editing - all are more limited when using the Mobile version of the HP Smart application.

This is a limitation of the Mobile app and not due any supported printer features.

If there is any other software for the printer, it can be found and loaded here:

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software

If / When asked, opt for the "full driver".

When the printer is on the network, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / configure the printer.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

EWS can also be reached from HP Smart (both PC and Mobile versions).

@Dragon-Fur thank you so much for your help! You have a lot more info on this printer than any I could find when shopping for one. I understand this probably doesn’t suit what I need it for, since I posted this the art prints have been printed out with lines across it so I am going to exchange it. Where did you find all the info for the printer so I can have a look in depth myself for a different one? Or do you have one in mind that would suit my needs better

Hi @Dragon-Fur

Apologies for not getting back sooner.

Regarding Custom paper size using HP Smart app, I don't see the option to create one.  So HP Smart does not support custom paper size at this time.

@Keeleyprints

Hope you have a better idea what sort of printer you need to purchase.
