officejet 6958 will not print from laptop
06-01-2020 01:47 PM

My printer was working fine not too long ago but I started having problems after the ink ran out. after replacing the ink I had a hard time trying to get the test prints to work just by printing from the printer alone. finally, after a full ink cartridge worth of tests, reboots, and cleaning, it printed all colors fine. Then it suddenly did not want to print from my laptop. Ever since then it hasn't been able to connect.
I've unplugged and restarted it, deleted the app and its history from my computer and redownloaded it again, tried a different wifi router, have updated both the printer and computer software and have run the hp diagnostic doctor multiple times and it simply will. not. print.
That's the only message it gives me, nothing else just "Printing Error". As far as I know, there is nothing wrong the printer printing itself, again it works just fine when I run a test page from the printer. The funny thing is though it will scan to my laptop just fine, so I wouldn't think that the wireless connection is the issue
I'm at my wits end and don't know what else I can do, with the whole quarantine happening I really do not want to have to resort waiting to take it somewhere to get it fixed
any recommendations are much apreciated

Hi @ray1999
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.
Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
If you are able to print the test pages and make a copy fine, it means the hardware of the printer is working fine.
- Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network.
- This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the PC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
Clean reinstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
- Select your HP Printer
- Select Uninstall
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
- In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
- Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
- Click on the “Drivers” tab
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
- Select Ok
- Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
- Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.
Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.
Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.
Try printing.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
