I have a combo heaset/microphone jack on my laptop.  Can I use this as a microphone 'line in' with the other half of the line connected to the output of another device?  I want to copy a digital audio file from another device but if I use the built in mic in the lid I get some loss of quality.   When I try to do this and record, it doesn't work - is there a software setting needed, or will it just not work?

On many notebooks/laptops, the headphones/microphone combo port won't work as line in. You need an adapter. To get a good result, USB sound card with line-in is an option
