It seems like the one and only jack on the side is an output jack. A screen does not come up, when the jack is plugged in, asking me to indicate if the desired function is line in or line out. I'm trying to record 45's from my stereo phonograph to my computer using Audacity. That set-up (RCA jack from stereo into computer) has worked with other computers (even ancient ones), so I'm puzzled. Thanks in advance. - Jerry

The jack will not work with a single-purpose microphone type device. It will work with a headset but those use a different jack than a mic only device. Your easiest workaround is a $10 usb sound card dongle you can get on amazon.com that will have a true microphone jack. You adjust sound properties in the control panel so that the usb device is the input and go from there.
For a bit more money you can get a usb sound card that has true RCA in.

Thanks much for such a speedy answer! Do you think this dongle will work despite not specifying Windows 10?
If not, there's a flat-out external sound card for 16 dollars that will do the trick. Thanks much.

Probably but for an extra buck this one expressly says it will:
