HP Notebook - 14-cm0013na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a brand new Notebook, all updates and drivers are completely up-to-date. When I connect my HDMI cable to my TV the audio doesn't work. The volume button (near bottom right corner) says "No speakers or headphones plugged in".

I've been through troubleshooting and the entire virtual assistant process for both Sound and HDMI and nothing works.

Is there anything else I can do? Or is the Notebook just faulty?

@RectoVerso,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand you are having issues with the audio not working from the HDMI connection. No worries, I'll be glad to help you.

Splendid effort and fabulous description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score.  You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Are you able to hear sound when connected to the laptop using the same HDMI cable?

Have you tried to update the Bios?

In the meantime, I would suggest you go through the steps suggested in the support document for - HP PCs - Troubleshooting HDMI Display and Sound Issues (Windows 10, 8, 7)

Could you please respond to this post with the details as well as with the results of the troubleshooting for further assisting you.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I am not sure what happened to the latest response I posted on this but I will try again - the laptop is brand new, I have not made any recent changes to it and everything is up-to-date. I have tried updating the Bios, I have done the entire troubleshooting process and the support document and nothing has worked.

The 'no speakers or headphones plugged in' message stays up the whole time, and there is no sound coming through my TV or laptop.

@RectoVerso,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

As I understand you have followed the steps suggested from the previous post and still having the same issue. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.

In this scenario, I would suggest here is to run the audio test from the F2 (Please remember to capture the failure ID for further assistance).

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

  • The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

  • Select Component tests.

List of the Component tests

  • Please initiate a test on the Audio - The Audio Playback Test checks your system to make sure the audio device is functioning properly. During the test, a few music notes are played in sequence and then repeated. This test takes 1 minute to complete. Click Audio, then click Run once. Choose either the speakers or the headphones. When asked, enter the number of notes you heard.

If the audio test passes then the evidence indicates towards a software issue. In that case, you may perform the steps as described in detail from this link: HP PCs - No Sound on HP Computer

Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

Hi,

The audio test worked. Just to be clear - there is and always has been sound on the laptop when it isn't plugged in to the HDMI cable, but it doesn't come out of either when connected to the TV. I think the troubleshooting link you've sent is for general no sound through the laptop, so I'm not sure which part you are suggesting I try there.

Thanks,

@RectoVerso,

Thank you for replying,

As I understand you have run the test and it seems to have passed without any errors.

In this scenario, Just wanted to check if you are able to hear sound from the laptop when the TV is disconnected.

Could you please respond to this post with the details as this will help me in further assisting you.

Take care now and do have a fabulous week ahead. 🙂
Regards,

@RectoVerso,

I am responding on behalf of @Jeet_singh as he is out for the day. It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

I reviewed your conversation and understand that you are not getting sound when the computer is connected to your TV.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check whether the issue is resolved.

If the HDMI device is not set as default device, you cannot hear the sound from HDMI output. Follow steps below to set the HDMI device as Default Device:

1) Right-click on the sound volume icon in the lower right corner of Windows. A context menu will pop up.

2) Click Playback devices.

3) In the Playback tab, select Digital Output Device or HDMI option. Click Set Default and click OK. Then the HDMI sound output will be set as default.

If you do not see the Digital Output Device or HDMI option in the Playback tab, right click on the blank place, then click Show disconnected devices and Show disabled devices on the context menu. Then set it as the default device.

If you continue facing the issue, I recommend you update the audio driver from the below link and check whether the issue is resolved.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

The step you have recommended is one of the first troubleshooting tips on your troubleshooting guide, and I have been over it with your virtual assistant too. It does not work. The 'set default' button does not actually work to click on, but I have been through the step by right-clicking and then choosing the set default option. It does not work, the no speakers or headphones plugged in message remains.

I've also updated the drivers, as recommended in the troubleshooting advice which I have already said I have tried.
