Welcome to HP Support Forums. :) I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP laptop and there is sound from the headphones. The settings in sounds are grayed out and do not allow to disable or connect headphones. Speakers work fine. The troubleshooting says" no headphones connected." Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.

I would like to know if any changes (hardware or software) took place on the laptop after which this issue may have started. Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the steps as described in detail from this link to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix: http://hp.care/2e4xX3p

NOTE: This link contains standard steps for both speakers and headphones.

If the issue persists then you may download and install the HP Support Assistant if not available on your laptop: http://hp.care/2i3iQbq.

By using the HP Support Assistant, you may run a test on the audio (refer to Diagnostics and tools category from this link: http://hp.care/2fvNQNc).

When you reply, please mention the exact model no. of your HP laptop This link will help you to locate the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

All the best! :) Let me know.
